WELCOME TO HALTOM HOLLAR RANCH
Home of the Rocking Double H Brand
of Registered Texas Longhorns
Hello! We’re James and Lynette Haltom. We live in London, Kentucky and encourage anyone passing by to visit. Give us a call at (606) 877-8698 and you’ll get a free jar of Haltom Hollar Jam in addition to seeing some beautiful Texas Longhorns.
We purchased our first longhorns in 2012, but like most breeders we had to sell that herd and start over. Of course we were given the advice to buy the best you can afford in the beginning but we had to learn like everyone else. We got serious in 2013 and purchased Bubba Tuff Chex as a calf from Bob & Pam Loomis. At 12 months old he won Grand Champion Bull at the 2014 Southeastern Winchester Futurity. His sire Cowboy Tuff Chex is over 102 inches tip-to-tip and is the Guinness World Record holder as the longest horned bull in history. His grand dam BL Rio Catchet is over 97 inches tip-to-tip and is a Guinness World Record holder as well. His production has given us the conformation, size, color and lateral horn sets with twist we wanted in our herd.
Every year we add to the genetic line-up by choosing bulls with specific traits to enhance our breeding goals. You can see these bulls listed as reference sires. Their pedigrees are full of elite animals with tip-to-tip and twist genetics as well as size and conformation. Our program includes Artificial Insemination and Embryo Transfer breeding. This way we can use the very best genetics offered to create high-end progeny out of our foundation females.
In order for our cows to produce healthy calves we keep them in top body condition all year. In addition to lush Kentucky grass the pastures have high quality protein tubs, loose minerals and salt blocks scattered in multiple locations for easy access. In the winter we provide a custom beef mix fed five days a week.
Our entire herd is DNA tested and on file with the TLBAA. Not only does this extra step help new owners when they DNA test future progeny, but they can be certain of the genetics they are investing in. In addition we are in the process of becoming an official state certified herd as being Johne's, TB and Brucellosis free. This allows breeders to buy with confidence that they are getting a healthy animal.
We give our longhorns lemon cookies as treats and get the calves use to human contact as soon as possible. Because of the "cookie" training most will eat treats out of your hand. We want the experience of owning a Texas Longhorn to be enjoyable especially to new breeders. Having a friendly animal that is easy to work makes a big difference in that experience. When you purchase a Haltom Hollar Ranch bred and raised longhorn we've given them a great start.
James is a 26 year retired veteran of U.S. Navy. He served in Viet Nam and was stationed around the world. He lost his first wife of 28 years to cancer. He was a Hospice Nurse and traveled some ending up in California. I was living in California and fate brought us together. My first husband had also died from cancer. Our friendship blossomed into the wonderful marriage we have today.
James said we had to get out of California because he missed "green". I didn't know what that meant. So we got on a plane, landed in Knoxville, TN and eventually found a 45 acre secluded hollar in the Daniel Boone National Forest in Kentucky. In 2008 we packed the truck looking just like the Beverly Hillbillies and moved into an old trailer on the property and started to build our "Hillbilly Heaven". At that time we had no intentions of raising cattle because our property is mostly woods and hills.
For a few years James tried to convince me we should get a cow or two so we could raise our own meat. I had never been around a cow before, but I finally agreed as long as there were no bulls and no horns! Beef cattle are aggressive so we waited until by chance someone told us about the docile nature of Texas Longhorns. We purchased a few good blooded longhorns and in no time they were pets. I fell in love with them. Our neighbor joined in the endeavor by letting us use their pasture. That's how this all started.
In 2013 we were invited to a futurity where they show off young animals and the winners get rifles instead of ribbons. We entered two little bulls and they placed in the middle of the pack. I wanted to win one of those rifles so we had to get serious and buy better cattle. We changed our breeding program and in 2014 we entered Bubba Tuff Chex and Mighty Drag Iron Lady at the Southeastern Winchester Futurity. They both took first place and Bubba Tuff Chex won Grand Champion Bull so I got my rifles. Since then we have won or placed in most of the futurities we have entered. Going to these events is like a big family gathering and the friendships we've made across the country are priceless.
We are living our dream and couldn't imagine life without our longhorns. If you want to ask questions about them you can call us anytime at 606-877-8698. The best way to get to know how docile they are is to visit us. We'll take you out in the pastures and you can feed them cookies. It's an experience we're sure you'll enjoy.
Thanks for visiting our website and we hope you enjoy what you see.
